    What it costs to run.

The good news: a sauna only uses energy when you're in it. A 6 kW heater uses about 7–9 kWh for an hour of heat-up and an hour of bathing.

    Electric, per session
    $1.29–$1.66

6 kW heater at MG&E's residential rate of $0.184/kWh (Rg-1, 2026). On a bitter night with the heater flat-out for two hours, about $2.21. An 8 kW heater runs about $1.70–$2.20.

    Wood-fired, per session
    $4–$12

Mixed hardwood runs $165–$249 a face cord delivered in Dane County, or about $380 a full cord. Buy local or certified: Dane County is under a spongy moth quarantine.

    Upkeep, per year
    $250–$850

Stones ($30–$100), exterior stain ($75–$285), and a heater reserve. Add about $100–$250 for a chimney sweep with wood-fired.

    Taxes & insurance

Residential electricity is exempt from Wisconsin sales tax November through April, which is sauna season. A wired, permanently placed sauna may be assessed as real property. At Madison's 2025 rates, each $10,000 of added assessed value is about $180 a year, and assessors often value it below cost. A detached sauna usually falls under your homeowner's "other structures" coverage. Tell your agent, especially about a wood stove.

    $57,200
    Bathhouse 8-visit plan
    $42,000

    ~$22,000
    Installed sauna, all-in
    ~$21,500
    DIY sauna, all-in
    ~$13,500

Owning includes upfront cost, about $450/yr upkeep and about $1.50/session in electricity. The hot tub figure includes about 36,000 kWh of heating at MG&E rates. The bathhouse figures use a $55 drop-in and an 8-visit plan at $350/mo, typical of Madison's downtown bathhouse. Owning also means everyone in the house can use it, any night.
