The Dane County Sauna Report · 2026 edition

Madison got hot.

In two years, Madison went from a few locker-room saunas to a real sauna culture: a Nordic bathhouse downtown, wood-fired saunas on the lakes and rivers, private contrast suites and nearly a dozen infrared rooms. Here's the scene in numbers, free for anyone to cite.

Key findings

Seven things we learned.

From the price lists, reviews, codes and climate records behind our Madison sauna guide and permit guide.

  1. 01
The boom is recent, and it's wood-fired.

Four of Madison's five public social saunas opened or announced since 2023: Kindled (mobile, 2023–24), Saunaday (July 2025), Tuli on the Sugar River (August 2025) and Madison Saunas on Lake Wingra (November 2026). Three of the five burn wood.

  2. 02
A sauna hour costs about the same as a movie and popcorn.

Public sessions run $22–$37 per hour of access. Kindled's pop-ups are the priciest by the hour, and KOSA's three-hour spa session (with gratuity) the cheapest. Madison Saunas opens with the lowest door price in town: $27.

  3. 03
    Madison loves its saunas.

The eight featured saunas average 4.8 stars across 1,171 Google reviews. Four hold a perfect 5.0. The most common praise is hospitality and design. The most common complaints are price creep and peak-time crowding.

  4. 04
    Cold is the new differentiator.

Plunges range from Saunaday's 54°F pool to 45–48°F private tubs, 38–52°F gym tubs and actual lakes and rivers. Two venues now use natural water year-round or all winter.

  5. 05
    Infrared went mainstream, quietly.

We counted at least nine places offering infrared sessions, most of them private rooms inside massage, chiropractic and recovery clinics, typically $25–$35 for 30–45 minutes.

  6. 06
Backyard saunas almost always need a permit.

In 12 of 15 Dane County jurisdictions, a backyard sauna needs a structure permit at any size, and all 15 require an electrical permit. Three towns (Middleton, Oregon, Stoughton) have codes that could bar wood-fired sauna stoves.

  7. 07
The lakes give us less ice to plunge through.

Lake Mendota averaged 82 days of ice since 2001, down from 114 in the late 1800s. Its median freeze date has slid from mid-December to January 1. Last winter it held 71 days.
