Four evenings

Put two of them together.

Heat is better with cold on either side of it. Each of these pairs places that are close together.

The Atwood afternoon

Olbrich's tropical conservatory first (free Wednesday and Saturday 10am to noon), then about a mile and a half back down Atwood Avenue to Bohemian Oasis at Schenk's Corners for an hour in the Finnish sauna. Stay on Atwood for dinner.

Sunrise on Wingra

Madison Saunas opens at 7am. Two wood-fired saunas on the shore, the lake for a plunge, a fire pit outside. Breakfast afterward. There are no hot showers yet in the first season, so bring a hat.

Skate, then sweat

An hour on the Tenney Park lagoon when the ice is open, then a short drive to Saunaday downtown for the bathhouse loop. Book the sauna for after dark; the lagoon's warming house closes at 8pm on most nights.

A Saturday in Paoli

Drive 25–30 minutes southwest to Tuli, a glass-walled wood-fired sauna on the Sugar River. You plunge in the river. Make an afternoon of it in Paoli and drive home in the dark, warm.

The saunas

Where to get properly warm.

Full reviews, hours and tips for each are in every sauna in Madison.

Private suites: Bergamot, Bohemian Oasis

Book the room by the half hour or hour, for just the two of you. Bergamot, a massage studio on Globe Dr, has a cedar Finnish sauna: $60 an hour plus $15 for the second person. Bohemian Oasis on Atwood has a plant-filled sanctuary with a Finnish sauna big enough to lie down in, also $60 plus $15. Its smaller Garden Lounge sauna is $30 for 30 minutes for one or two. Neither has a plunge, so use the cold shower.

Hot and cold, privately: Reset

Reset Wellness Studio on Junction Rd has a contrast suite with a 185–195°F sauna and a 45–48°F plunge, for up to three people. $75 an hour plus $25 per extra guest, with a lower first-visit price. Closed Mondays.

The bathhouse: Saunaday

A Nordic-style bathhouse on S Blount St, a block from Lake Monona: two Finnish saunas, a steam room, a 54°F plunge pool and a lounge, for $55 each for two hours. Swimsuits, 18 and over, phones in the locker. Weekday mornings are the calmest; weekend evenings are the busiest.

The lake: Madison Saunas

Two wood-fired cedar saunas at Wingra Park, about 175°F, with Lake Wingra as the plunge. $27 each for an hour. Open 7am to 8pm daily from November 6, 2026, through at least early March.

The river: Tuli

A glass-walled wood-fired sauna on a bend of the Sugar River in Paoli, 160–200°F, with the river as the plunge. $39 each for 80 minutes. Our highest-rated sauna around Madison.

The spa: KOSA

Upstairs in the Garver Feed Mill: three hours of hot-stone sauna, aromatherapy steam, a cold rain shower and a tea lounge, $55 each plus an automatic gratuity. Gentler heat, lovely setting. Saturday late afternoons have music.

The pop-up: Kindled

A six-seat wood-fired trailer sauna in residence at Tricky Foods on E Lakeside St from November 1 to December 31, 2026, with social sessions on Tuesdays from 5 to 7pm. About $30–45 each. A good date if you like meeting people.

Warm without a sauna

Tropics, ice, and a hot room of another kind.

For a cheaper date, or the half of an evening that isn't in a sauna.

Olbrich's Bolz Conservatory

A glass pyramid of tropical plants, a waterfall and free-flying birds on Atwood Avenue. Open 10am to 4pm daily October through March. Small admission fee, free Wednesday and Saturday mornings 10 to noon. In 2026 the Orchid Escape exhibit ran from late January to early March, so watch for it around Valentine's Day.

Henry Vilas Zoo aviary

The zoo is free, parking included. The Tropical Rainforest Aviary and the other indoor buildings are open 10am to 4pm. Walk through the aviary, then over to the Vilas Park lagoon if it's frozen for skating.

Skating at Tenney Park

The city floods the Tenney Park lagoon for skating, with a warming house and skate rentals in the John Wall Family Pavilion. In 2025–26 rentals were $6 for adults, and the house was staffed Wednesday to Sunday afternoons and evenings. It all depends on the ice, so check the city's rink status before you go.

Hot yoga

Inner Fire Yoga has been teaching hot yoga in Madison since 2002, with east and west studios. Dragonfly Hot Yoga has several studios around town. A drop-in class each and a slow dinner afterward.

Floating

Float Madison on E Wilson St has private float rooms with skin-temperature salt water, in 60-minute sessions. Not hot, but the warmest kind of quiet. Reset also has float pods.

Frozen Assets

Clean Lakes Alliance's free festival on the Mendota ice at The Edgewater: Saturday, February 6, 2027, 10am to 3pm, with kites on the lake Sunday, February 7. Go for an hour in the cold, then book a sauna for the afternoon.
